TROJAN RELAYS: Trojan boys win 5th straight Trojan Relays title in AA, ML/B-O wins A

WORTHINGTON — Finishing with at least one top-three placing in 14 of the 18 events Thursday afternoon, the Worthington Trojan boys racked up 149.5 points and impressively claimed the Class AA team title at the 60th Annual Trojan Relays high school track and field meet at Trojan Field.

Luverne (127.5) edged Marshall (127) for second place, while Montevideo (103.5), Jackson County Central (96.5), Pipestone Area (53) and Windom (47) rounded out the seven-team standings.

Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin (146) won the Class A boys’ championship by two points over Murray County Central (144), while Fulda was a close third place with 134 points. Southwest Christian/Edgerton (85), Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central (70), Adrian (63) and Worthington’s Junior Varsity (47) completed the seven-team standings.

“There were a lot of good performances on the boys’ side today,” Worthington co-head coach Ken Henkels said. “Our boys did very well across the board, as our depth and experience came through nicely for us. It was a great day all the way around, and the weather turned out to be just beautiful.”

Musa, Weg and Rodriguez lead WHS to fifth straight Trojan Relays title

Worthington won four individual events and claimed the Trojan Relays team championship for the fifth consecutive season. Mubarik Musa won a pair of races, while Mitch Weg and Danny Rodriguez each took home a gold medal for the Trojans.

As expected, Musa won both the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run. The senior sensation clocked times of 4:32.27 and 10:04.99, respectively, in his last meet at Trojan Field.

“It was a very successful day, and I am glad to be a part of our last home meet this season,” Musa said. “I gave it all I had and was cruising today, although my times were a bit slower than what I wanted them to be. There was a slight wind that may have played a role, but it was pretty nice out.”

Weg cleared six feet to win the high jump, placed second in the triple jump (40-7.25) and finished third in the long jump (19-1.25) for a strong overall outing in his final home meet as a Trojan.

Rodriguez won the 100-meter dash (11.65) and placed second in the 200-meter dash (23.15), finishing behind Marshall’s Beau Bofferding (22.62, new meet record). Bofferding, who did not run the 100, also won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.79 seconds.

“It is fun to race against Beau,” Rodriguez said. “It is nice to face tough competition like that, and I ran well today. The 100 is normally my best event, and it was fun to win that race.”

Rodriguez also teamed with Jessie Guerra, Ethan Spittle and Will Dudley to win the 4x200-meter relay for Worthington, as they clocked a time of 1:33.56.

Dudley was second in the pole vault, clearing 12-6. Jon Vorwald (53.56) and Spittle (53.65) finished 2-3 in the 400 for the Trojans, while Nathan Landwehr (2:10.64) raced to a third-place finish in the 800-meter run.

Gbrown Ochothow rounded out the individual highlights for Worthington, finishing second in the 300-meter hurdles (42.79) and third in the 110-meter hurdles (16.75). Tony Ektnitphong was fourth in the 200 with a time of 24.44 for the Trojans.

Luverne’s Daniel Muller wins three events

Daniel Muller led Luverne with a trio of first-place finishes, as he won the 110-meter hurdles (15.69), 300-meter hurdles (41.48) and pole vault (12-6). He also placed fourth in the high jump by clearing 5-6.

“Muller had an outstanding day and is really coming on as of late,” Luverne head coach Craig Nelson said. “He is a senior and has his sights set on doing some big things here late in the season.”

The Cardinals also had Keegan Schoenfelder (discus, 126-10) and Alex Weis (shot put, 48-5) deliver first-place results, while Cody Rofshus was third in the shot put with a heave of 42-2.

Josh Friedrichson finished third in the 1,600 (4:50.09), while Drew Weis (800, 2:13.06) and Matt Oehlerts (long jump, 18-11.5) both had a fourth-place finish for Luverne.

JCC’s 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Patrick Hanson, Darnell Taylor-Breck, Warren Darling and Izaac Lucht won with a time of 46.55 seconds. Darling was second individually in the long jump, leaping a distance of 19-1.5.

The Huskies’ Alex Tewes was second in the shot put (42-5) and fourth in the discus (117-9), Nick Carroll was third in the pole vault (11-0) and Taylor-Breck was fourth in the triple jump (38-2.25).

Aaron Kozlowski led PA with a second-place finish in the 110 hurdles (16.34) and a third-place result in the 200 (23.60), while Jamie Hartke was second in the discus (123-0) for the Arrows.

Michael Rivera and Douglas Tabb went 3-4 in the 100 for Windom, clocking times of 11.85 and 11.89, respectively. Brady Ysker-Giefer placed third in the discus (123-0) for the Eagles.

ML/B-O wins six events in Class A

Led by a pair of first-place finishes from Jose Gonzalez, ML/B-O won six events and narrowly won the Class A championship.

Gonzalez won both the 200 (23.69) and the long jump (19-5.5) in addition to placing second in the 100 (11.84). He was also on the Wolverines’ winning 4x100 team, joining Demar Rodney, John Boyd and Billy Soutthivong to clock a time of 46.94.

Rodney and Boyd were joined by Chris Heffele and Tony Dongkong to win the 4x200, clocked at 1:42.17. Soutthivong was third in the 200 with a time of 25.00.

Hamlet Tanyavong (40-4) and Britton Pankratz (37-7.75) went 1-2 in the triple jump for ML/B-O. Tanyavong was also second in the long jump (19-0.5), while Pankratz added a second-place finish in the high jump (5-4).

Tyler Friesen was the other individual champion for the Wolverines, clearing 12 feet to win the pole vault.

MCC’s Tanner Nepp was a dual winner in the discus (130-5) and shot put (41-10.75). Sam Beech was second in the discus (124-4) and third in the shot put (39-0) for the Rebels.

Jack Thony won the 100 (11.52), and the Rebels’ team of Jack Erickson, Andy Garza, Jovany Trujillo and Alex Solheim won the 4x800-meter relay in a time of 9:20.10.

Solheim was second in the pole vault (10-6) and third in the 800 (2:13.71). Tyler Schotting tied for second in the 300 hurdles (44.56) and was third in the high jump (5-2) for the Rebels.

Jan Hlozek was second in the 3,200 (11:34.07), Aaron Boock placed third in the triple jump (35-10), and Max Whitehead finished third in the 110 hurdles (17.81) for a few more Rebels’ highlights.

Fulda’s Nate Getting won both the 400 (55.23) and 800 (2:09.65), while John Getting was second in the 800 (2:10.74) and won the 1,600 (4:55.64).

“I ran a season-best time in the 1,600,” John Getting said. “It was nice to run with the sun shining today, and I felt comfortable running out there.”

Keith Gehl won the high jump (5-6), and Max Dibble was second in the shot put (43-2) and third in the discus (123-6) for Fulda. Alex Holmes added a third-place finish in the pole vault (9-6) for the Raiders.

SWC/E’s Austin LaFollette had a big day, winning the 300 hurdles (42.40) and placing second in both the 110 hurdles (17.10) and the 200 (24.60).

“The wind kind of blew me around the corner,” LaFollette said after winning the 300 hurdles. “I am having a successful season in the 300 hurdles and set our school record last week.”

W-WG/RRC’s Levi Bunting won the 110 hurdles (16.77) and tied for second in the 300 hurdles (44.56). The Chargers’ team of Bunting, Lasse Bahr, Tyson Berg and Tanner Pederson won the 4x800 relay with a time of 3:46.90.

Adrian’s Jase Pater won the 3,200 with a time of 11:03.47, while teammate Kody Henning was second in the 400 with a time of 56.23.
