PREP BOYS' TENNIS: Luverne clinches SWC championship

LUVERNE — Luverne’s boys’ tennis squad locked up the Southwest Conference championship Tuesday with a 7-0 win over MACCRAY.

LUVERNE — Luverne’s boys’ tennis squad locked up the Southwest Conference championship Tuesday with a 7-0 win over MACCRAY.

Joey Vajgrt defeated Nick Kellen at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0, Dustin Deutsch knocked off Brandon Wieberdink at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-0, Jonny Vajgrt won No. 3 singles over Jae Lin 6-0, 6-0 and Andrew Jelken took No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-0 over Nate Eisenmenger for the Cardinals.

In doubles action, Scott Nelson and Blake Ziegler won No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-1 over Andrew Duttoux and Connor Hagemeyer, Ethan Johnson and Nathan Stensland-Bos won No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-1 over Chris Sietsema and Austin Sager and Austin Stroeh and Matt Arends clinched the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Chris Preuss and Niti Cheewart.

The win put Luverne 14-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

“We have a lot more experience than MACCRAY and it showed again on the courts,” LHS Greg Antoine said. “It is nice to see that even when we are a stronger team, we still play hard and put effort into the matches.

“We need to work on playing a little more keep away than catch during the points. We need to put points away when we have the chance.”

Luverne closes the regular season Thursday at Blue Earth Area.
