WHS BOYS' TENNIS: Worthington closes regular season with 6-1 win over Blue Earth Area

BLUE EARTH — Worthington’s boys’ tennis squad closed out the regular season Tuesday with a 6-1 win over Blue Earth Area to finish the season 11-2.

The Trojans were able to get the victory without their No. 1, No. 2 and half of their No. 3 doubles teams.

“All season we’ve moved the lineup around and guys have stepped up,” WHS coach Mike Marquardt said, “It was a really, really good season.

“Our goal was to get that No. 2 seed at sections and with an 11-2 record, it seems as though we should do that.

“It’s up to us what happens next. We need to get focused and look toward sections.”

The Trojans swept singles, as Dan Wetering knocked off Hunter Myers at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-2, Lance Homan won No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-4 over Eric Purvis, Carter Lindner won No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-1 over Nick Lein and Andrew Johnson defeated Tristan Drake at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles action, A.J. Hayenga and Nick Newman won No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-2 over Ben Gettis and Jaron King and Isaac Houselog and Jonah McDonald won No. 2 doubles 6-3, 6-0 over Chandler Kienitz and Trenton Stindtman for the Trojans. WHS’s Brandon Harberts and Sebastian Licea fell at No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-2 to Cole Klinksiek and Martin Granados as the only loss on the day for the Trojans.

Section play begins Monday for the Trojans.

“Hopefully we can keep rolling,” Marquardt said. “There’s nothing there to stop us.”
