SLAYTON — The Lake Shetek Area Chapter of Let’s Go Fishing (LGF) With Seniors is preparing for another season of fishing and boating excursions, and will have a volunteer training for captains and first mates at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Key Largo on Keeley Island, north of Slayton.
The training lasts approximately two hours and involves an indoor presentation on safety and general outing information and concludes with training information on the pontoon.
As use of the pontoon continues to grow, a need for volunteers is also growing. On each trip, a captain pilots the pontoon and a first mate assists the guests during the outing. Volunteers are informed of scheduled outings and can choose which trips they would like to attend.
The handicap-accessible pontoon is based at Lake Shetek, but also spends time on lakes in Balaton, Fulda and Worthington. LGF provides free fishing and boating excursions to area residents 55 and older. Last year, the chapter was involved in 40 outings, which served 400 area residents.
