WHS BASEBALL: Trojans keep conference championship hopes alive with 15-5 win over PA

PIPESTONE — Worthington did its part to keep the hope of a Southwest Conference championship alive Thursday, knocking off Pipestone Area 15-5 Thursday in baseball action.

With the win and a split in the doubleheader between Jackson County Central and Marshall Thursday, the Trojans are in control of their own fate. A sweep of the doubleheader versus Redwood Valley Monday clinches the conference outright for the Trojans, a split of the doubleheader gives the championship to JCC, WHS and Marshall and if the Trojans drop both, JCC and Marshall share the title.

“We’re in charge of our own fate,” WHS coach Stacy Sauerbrei said. “You can pull out any cliché you want for that one.

“We have to be ready to play.”

Lucas Henning was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, Blake Rogers was 3-for-4 with a home run, triple, double and three RBIs and Jon Reller got the win on the mound, striking out four in 2 2/3 innings pitched for WHS (11-3, 8-2).

“Our pitchers had some sore arms and I was really proud with the way they toughed it out,” Sauerbrei said. “Rogers just clobbered the ball.”

Damien Skyberg, Brady Bos, Jaymes Zollner and Josh Mabon each had a hit for PA (7-10, 4-8).

Worthington will close out the season with the SWC championship on the line Monday in a doubleheader with Redwood Valley at home.
