LUVERNE — On what turned out to be a very nice day for a high school track and field meet — after it finally stopped raining — athletes from the eight teams competing in the Sub-Section 10 meet at Cardinal Field earned advancement to next week’s Section 3A competition with many sparkling performances Thursday.

Highlighting those efforts were new meet records established by Adrian senior Ausytn Thier in the girls’ 800-meter run and by Luverne sophomore Makayla Hohn in the girls’ 3,200-meter run.

While those two were clocking new record times for the meet — which has been known as Sub-Section 10 since 1992, and as District 8 for nearly 60 years prior to that — Murray County Central junior Jack Thony won four boys’ events and schoolmate Hannah Schmidt, a fleet-footed sophomore, paced a strong effort by the Rebel girls who nearly won the team title.

Perennial power Luverne claimed both team championships, scoring 200.5 points and winning the boys’ title by a large margin.

In the girls’ team chase, the scores were tightly-bunched as Luverne (128), MCC (126.5) and Fulda (112) were all in contention.
