VFW BASEBALL: Worthington VFW takes third place in Sioux City tournament

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Worthington’s VFW baseball team came home with a third-place trophy in the Sioux City Tournament, going 2-2 over the weekend. Worthington knocked off Norfolk (Neb.) in the third-place game, which was called due to time, 13-6 in five innings.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Worthington’s VFW baseball team came home with a third-place trophy in the Sioux City Tournament, going 2-2 over the weekend.

Worthington knocked off Norfolk (Neb.) in the third-place game, which was called due to time, 13-6 in five innings.

Carson Hagen got the win on the mound in the third-place game, pitching two innings, giving up one hit, no earned runs and striking out three. Ryan Lee was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Roque Soto was 1-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, Trevor Wietzema was 4-for-4 with two runs, four RBIs and three doubles and Landon Ahlers was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs to lead Worthington (4-2).

“We are young,” Worthington coach T.D. Hostikka said. “The kids are learning and learning fast.

“If we don’t make mistakes, we’ll come along fine. We came home with a third-place trophy, so they’re learning.”

Elmwood-Murdock (Neb.) beat Worthington 13-2 in Game 1. Tristan Sorenson (run), Logan Thuringer (two RBIs, run) and Nate Braaksma were all 1-for-3 for Worthington.

In Game 2, Sorenson threw a complete game, striking out eight and giving up one earned run to lead Worthington to a 3-1 win. Carson Hagen was 2-for-4 with a run, Ryan Lee was 1-for-2 with a run and Oliver Wolyniec was 2-for-3 with an RBI to help pace Worthington.

In Game 3, Worthington fell to South Siox City 4-2. Carson Hagen got a no decision, pitching five innings and giving up one earned run. Sorenson was 2-for-4, Wolyniec was 1-for-3, Blake Fauske was 1-for-3 with an RBIand Soto was 1-for-1 with a run to lead Worthington.

Worthington will host Luverne today.
