SIOUX CITY, Neb. — Worthington Legion took third place at the Sioux City Tournament in Nebraska Friday and Saturday, going 3-1 on the weekend.
In Game 1, Worthington defeated Ponco (Neb.) 4-1 behind nine strikeouts in five innings on the mound for Jon Reller, while Rylan Scholtes added two hits, including a double, at the plate.
In Game 2, Worthington managed just three hits, falling 2-1 to Ralston (Neb.) Lucas Henning got the loss on the mound, striking out four and walking one in four innings. Blake Rogers was 2-for-3 and Deron Soderholm added a hit for Worthington.
Nate Jensen pitched a gem in Game 3, striking out seven and giving up two hits in six innings to lead Worthington to an 8-1 win over Dakota Valley. Rogers and Aaron Pavelko were each 3-for-4, while Henning, Reller and Tommy Hayenga each had two hits for Worthington. Henning, Rogers and Scholtes each had two RBIs.
In the final game, Soderholm got the win on the mound, pitching five innings, while Rogers added three RBIs to lead Worthington to an 8-6 win over South Sioux City. Henning, Scholtes, Rogers and Hayenga each had two hits.
Worthington Area goes 2-2 in Mankato tourney
MANKATO — The Worthington Area Storm split four games at the Mankato Tournament over the weekend, defeating New Prague 6-3 and losing to New Prague 6-3, while beating Jackson 10-1 and losing to Jackson 2-1 in 18-and-under softball action.
In Game 1 on Saturday, Rebecca Kazemba had two hits and an RBI, Angel a Robinson had three hits, while picking up the win on the mound, Shaina Lonneman had a single and an RBI and Jenny Majerus had two RBIs to lead the Storm to a 6-3 win over New Prague.
Worthington Area made it a perfect Saturday, beating Jackson 10-1 in Game 2. K.C. Riley had a solo homer, a three-RBI triple and an RBI double, Robinson had an RBI single, Taylor Scheier had two RBIs and Kazemba had an RBI to lead the Storm (4-2). Rachel Kontz went seven innings and struck out six to get the win.
The Storm went 0-2 on Sunday. Robinson had a two-run homer, as Worthington Area fell 6-3 to New Prague.
Worthington Area fell to Jackson 2-1 in the weekend finale. Christine Kazemba threw six innings and struck out one. The Storm attempted a squeeze play to the tie the game in the final inning, but were thrown out at the plate.
Worthington Area will host Windom Tuesday in a doubleheader.

WELCOME — Fox Lake scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to turn a one-run deficit into a four-run lead Sunday, claiming a 9-5 victory over Heron Lake in a First Nite League amateur baseball game.
Geoff Krumwiede (3-for-4, RBI), Joey Fitzgerald (2-for-4, RBI) and Matt Bezdicek (2-for-3, RBI) were among the top hitters for the Foxes, who defeated Lakefield by a final score of 7-3 earlier in the day.
Jon Traetow (four innings, six strikeouts and two walks) and Brennan Holm (three innings, four strikeouts and no walks) did the pitching for Fox Lake.
Ethan Duffy (six strikeouts, two walks) pitched five innings for Heron Lake, while Lon Eichenberger faced three batters in a scoreless sixth.
Tony Jorgensen (RBI double), Eric Milbrath (triple) and Kirk McBreen were each 2-for-3 to lead the Lakers at the plate. Octavio Jimenez belted an RBI double for Heron Lake, as well.
Now 6-6 overall and 6-3 in the league, the Lakers play at Jackson Wednesday night.

Hadley 14, Tracy 4
HADLEY — Zach Bruns picked up the win, giving up three earned, while striking out four in seven innings on the mound for Hadley (3-8, 3-6) in Gopher League action Sunday.
Bruns was also 2-for-4 with a grand slam, while Eric Wieneke was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and three RBIs and Jamie Doelter was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double to lead Hadley.
Jason Minett was 3-for-4 and Greg Barnes had three RBIs for Tracy.
Hadley will host Jackson Sunday.
