SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Worthington’s VFW baseball team swept Sioux Falls East in Sioux Falls Tuesday.
Post 3958 scored three runs in the top of the seventh in Game 1 to win 8-7 and used a stellar pitching performance from Ryan Lee to win 16-3 in Game 2.
After Tristan Sorenson knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice to cut the Sioux Falls East lead to 7-6, Logan Thuringer hit a two-run triple to give Worthington (13-6) an 8-7 lead.
Lee came into the bottom of the seventh to shut the door for Worthington, notching the save on two strikeouts and giving the win to Trevor Wietzema on the mound. Oliver Wolyniec was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Sorenson was 2-for-4 with two runs to help lead Worthington.
“That rally took everybody,” Worthington coach T.D. Hostikka said. “It started with the bottom of the order and they really pulled together.”
Worthington never trailed in Game 2, as Sorenson was 2-for-4 with three runs, Thuringer was 3-for-4 with two runs, Lee was 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs, Carson Hagen was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Landon Ahlers was 1-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.
Lee got more than enough from his offense, as he went all seven innings, giving up three runs on three hits, while striking out 12.
“We pitched really well with the exception of two innings in the first game,” Hostikka said.
Worthington will host Slayton Thursday.
