Reaction from Reps. Rod Hamilton and Joe Schomacker on health care law decision

District 22 state representatives Joe Schomacker and Rod Hamilton react to today's Supreme Court decision regarding health care.

In an email sent to Rep. Rod Hamilton R-Mountain Lake, Hamilton said:

"Chief Justice John Roberts said, "It is not our job to protect the people from the consequences of their political choices." and called it a tax. Which is the largest tax increase on the middle class since the imposition of the income tax.

The final ruling will take place this fall during the November election."

In an email from Rep. Joe Schomacker R-Luverne, Schomacker said:

"As time passes, the standing outcome of constitutional law from this ruling will be Chief Justice Roberts' statement about the court's job not being to protect people from the consequence of their political choices.

Upholding today's ruling keeps the creation of 21 new taxes to collect

$675 billion over the next ten years while cutting Medicare benefits to seniors in hospitals and nursing homes. All the while, Minnesota's ability to continue leading in healthcare will be compromised through federal regulation.

Instead of looking at a one-size-fits-all federal model, we should be driven to look at health care reform locally. There are countless components that determine a persons health, and we must collaborate locally to achieve the outcome our society really desires.

We also should be looking at removing burdensome regulation, not adding more to it. If this discussion and debate was about real health care reform and not just health insurance overhauls, we'd all be better for it."
