SIBLEY, Iowa — A cat named Chester, a rabbit called Cool Dude and a miniature horse named General. Accompanied by two crabs, a goat and a dog, these animals and their owners all took part in the first Cloverbud and Open Class Youth Pet Show Wednesday afternoon at the Osceola County Fair in Sibley.

The show was open to Cloverbuds (children kindergarten through second grade), 4-H members who weren’t already showing their pet and non 4-H members.

All participants were limited to one entry, and were required to be able to handle and care for their pet during judging. The pets were to be kept in a cage, box or on a leash at all times. Also, all of the pets had to be owned by the participant and the participant’s family.

“This is the first time we’ve done this,” said County Youth Coordinator Michael Compton. “It’s really just a good opportunity to give the kids a chance to get out in front of people and show their pets.”

It was Compton’s idea to have the open class pet show, though other counties in the area have done it before.

“I wanted to do something new at the fair this year,” said Compton, the county youth director. “We’re also doing a stuffed animal show and a robotics Brush Bot project.”

The stuffed animal show and the Brush Bot project will be Saturday.
