Letter: Some things simply more important than Mars rover

The latest NASA project, the Mars rover Curiosity, cost us taxpayers more than $2.5 billion to create, not to mention the cost to blast it to Mars. Sometime in early August, this wonderful technology might land on the red planet and might work (even NASA scientists admit it may be a failure).
Yet, we still have no cure for diabetes or cancer. Someone please explain to my young son why this is more important than curing the Type 1 diabetes he was diagnosed with in 2004 at age 3. After all, I promised him a cure by the time he graduated from high school. I’ve only got a few precious years of hoping and praying left before I disappoint him with a promise gone bad.
Oh well. At least we, as a nation obsessed with uncovering the mysteries of Mars, have our priorities in order.
