LAKELAND — Worthington FC’s U15 team put the finishing touches on a perfect season Wednesday, knocking off Waseca 3-1 in the state championship in Lakeland.
It was by no means an easy victory for Worthington, as Waseca netted the first goal in the opening minutes.
Andrew Johnson tied the game up several minutes later on a cross kick from the right side. Both teams went back and forth before Ivan Rodriguez put Worthington up 2-1 and Jesus Ordaz sealed the victory with a goal late in the second half.
Worthington is the first state champs in the newly formed Worthington Football Club.
Worthington finished the season with an 11-0-4 record and was complimented by the Worthington Area YMCA for its respect and playing during the state tournament.
