This is a reply to Gerald Hubbling’s reply to my letter about President Obama’s plan to allow states to seek a waiver of the “requirement to work provision” in the welfare reform of 1996 signed by President Clinton.
According to a letter sent to The Washington Times by Rep. Dave Camp and printed July 25, the welfare reform has produced good results. Rep. Camp, who helped author the reform legislation, states that employment of single mothers increased by 15 percent from 1996-2000, and caseloads declined by 57 percent through December 2011. Why would anyone want to allow states out of the requirement to work when the success of the law has produced these results?
If states want to run a pilot program to help people find employment, run it in conjunction with the existing law.
