FULDA — The Worthington Trojans swept the Fulda Raiders 3-0 in a volleyball match between Southwest and Red Rock Conference rivals Friday night in Fulda.
“We still have some things to improve on,” Trojans coach Melissa Schutz said. “The flow of the game was a little slow.”
The Trojans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Game 1, but Fulda battled back and tied the game at four just six plays later. Both teams traded points back and forth before the Trojans broke open the game with a six- point run to take a 13-8 lead.
Worthington kept ahead of Fulda for the rest of the game, leading by as many as nine. The Trojans went on a six-point run to end the game, winning 25-16. The game-winning point came off of a kill by Paige Gravenhof, who had 17 set assists and was 21-for-21 on the serve in the game.
“The first game we came out really strong, we got a little slow at points, but we got through it,” Trojans libero Anna Koepsell said.
Koepsell was 12-for-12 on the serve with eight digs and 15 serve receptions for the Trojans.
“I told the girls to just fight point by point to get the lead back,” Koepsell said.
In Game 2, the Raiders came out swinging, going on a 4-0 run before the Trojans picked up their first point on a kill by Tara Svalland, one of her six kills on the night. The Raiders continued to control the game, taking a 7-4 lead before.
A kill by Gravenhof on the next point then sparked a five-point run by the Trojans, giving the team their first lead of the game at 9-7.
The Raiders would jump out to a 23-16 lead after picking up 13 of 17 points after trailing 12-10. However, the Trojans would not go away, scoring eight straight points to take a 24-23 lead.
