Obituary: Mina Mohns

Mina LaVonne Mohns, age 82, was born on September 16, 1929, in Lakefield, MN, the daughter of Carl and Christine (Hinkel) Smith. She grew up in Lakefield. After graduating from Lakefield High School in 1947, she moved to Worthington and worked as a nurse’s aide in the Worthington Hospital.

Mina and Wayne were married on December 18, 1949, in Lakefield. After their marriage, they moved to a farm in northeast Round Lake Township, and in 1953, they moved to the Mohns’ family farm in Round Lake until retiring in 2010, when they moved to Jackson, MN.

Mina was employed as a catalog manager and sales clerk at JC Penney, a cook at the Thunderbird Restaurant, and worked in the fall at Ling’s Apple Orchard, along with helping with the farm bookkeeping.

She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church for 50 years, teaching Sunday school, was a member of the Ladies Aide and active in the choir. In 1999, she became a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Round Lake. Mina was an active member and served many offices of the Golden Rule Ladies Aide and project group. She enjoyed working with her children and served many years as an adult 4-H leader and band mother.

In 1985, she went back to school taking a course in Apartment Management and Maintenance at Jackson Vocational School.

Mina’s greatest love was her family. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow and was always interested in their active lives. Mina also enjoyed golfing and bowling. She developed a great talent of oil painting, producing some beautiful scenes. Mina died on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at the Sanford Jackson Medical Center in Jackson, MN.

Mina is survived by her husband, Wayne Mohns of Jackson, MN; four children, Linda (Al) Ling of Round Lake, MN, and their children and families, Jason (Keri) Ling - children: Jacquelynn, Jenessa, Coral, Jasmine, twins: Ashley and Calah, Jacob and Kian; Shauna (Tom) Hofer - children: Toller, Payton, Bergan, Ellah and Bryleigh; Kris Ling - children: Sophie and Charlie and Amber (Wade) Lewandowski - children: Taya, Briehyn and Lily; Brad (Linda) Mohns of Round Lake, MN, and their children and families, Chad (Angie) Mohns; Stacy (Tim) Tiahrt - children: Ava, Hailey and Broghan and Tasha (Trey) Diggs - son: Tavion; Robin (Steve) Farley of Brandon, SD, and their children and families, Cassidy (Corey) Walker - twins: Corey and Camari; Kelley (Kody) Kriech and Katie (Brady) Schwebach; Kim (Al) Langel of Senica, MO, and their children and families, Karissa (Eric) Eaton - children: Dietrik, Jacob and Kaitlyn and Kelcey Langel. Mina is also survived by one brother, Carl of Lake in the Hills, IL and three sisters, Gloria Anderson of Windom, MN, Sandra (Gary) Vos of Onalaska, WI and Sharon Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Christine Smith and one sister, Mercedes Micklos.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at 10:30 a.m., at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Round Lake, MN, with Pastor Benjamin Rucker officiating. Burial will be in the Round Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington and also one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
