LUVERNE — Luverne’s girls’ tennis team knocked off Yellow Medicine East 5-2 Monday.
“It was a wild match with the outcome up for grabs until the very end,” LHS coach Greg Antoine said. “Three matches went three sets and we were lucky enough to win all three.
“It could have very easily been a 5-2 loss for us.”
Kaitlin Wohnoutka won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Emily Robinson won a battle at No. 2 singles 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), Danielle Kneip won at No. 3 singles, storming back from losing the first set 6-1 and taking the final two sets 7-5 and 6-1, respectively.
In doubles action, Paige Adams and Kynzie Smedsrud won at No. 1 doubles 6-1, 6-3 and Lexi Severtson and Brianna Erickson won at No. 2 doubles 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4.
“The No. 1s really came out and did their jobs,” Antoine said. “Both Kaitlin and the doubles team of Paige and Kynzie really played well in their matches.
“Danielle fell way behind by losing the first set and struggling in the second set. She pulled it out in the end and then played extremely well to win quite easily in the third set.”
Luverne moves to 5-2 overall on the season and will travel to Redwood Valley Thursday to play Redwood Valley and Montevideo in a triangular.
“We hung in there tonight in every match,” Antoine said. “We didn’t give up when things got down.
“We still need to clean up our games. We need to fix things like hitting it to our opponents standing at the net, smashing our first serve out and then softly hitting it into the net for a double fault. We need to really work on having a plan of attack for each point, not just hitting it back and seeing what happens next.”
