Obituary: David Dyke

David A. Dyke, 74, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at Sanford Health Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept 8, at Prairie Hills Covenant Church, 2500 Powder House Road, Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept 7, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m., Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main, Sioux Falls.

David Arlen Dyke was born August 4, 1938 in Dickinson County, IA, to Lester and Jessie (Flint) Dyke. He graduated from Logan High School, Raymond SD, in 1956, and then attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. He later transferred to the University of Minnesota and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1962. While David was in college, he met and married the love of his life, Carol Paulson. The couple would be blessed with two sons, Paul and John.

David was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell, KY from 1962-1964. He later retired as Captain from the Army Reserve in 1969. In 1964 he moved with his family to Worthington, MN and began his first business – Worthington Tractor Salvage. The family resided in Worthington for 22 years, then moved to Sioux Falls in 1986.

David was involved with many other business projects including Minnehaha Dairy Queen, Dakota Homestead Insurance Company and All States Ag Parts Inc. He also spent a great deal of time and effort purchasing and restoring the Carpenter Hotel in downtown Sioux Falls. This project helped begin the successful revitalization of the downtown business district. David had been a past member of the Lions, Toastmasters, and is a member of Prairie Hills Covenant Church.

David enjoyed international travel with his wife, Carol (they visited all seven continents), and he also loved taking fishing trips to Canada with family and friends. His lifelong passion was always tractors and he spent many hours collecting, repairing and restoring them at his farm-shop near Baltic SD.

Those left to cherish David’s memory include: his wife of almost 52 years, Carol; sons, Paul (Lori) and their children, Matthew and Sarah, all of Hartford, and John (Susan) and their children, Thomas and William, all of Eagan, MN; brother Richard (Susan) Dyke of Worthington; and numerous other relatives and friends. David is preceded in death by: his parents.
