TROJAN GIRLS' SOCCER: Trojan girls’ soccer falls to MW

MANKATO — The Trojan girls’ soccer team ended the season with a 9-0 loss to Mankato West in the first round of the Section 2A soccer tournament Monday.

“Our defense had a hard time clearing the ball all game long,” WHS coach Emily Ahlquist said. “We also had trouble keeping our defensive shape like we need to.”

The Trojans were outshot by a large margin in the loss, but the score could have been worse had goalie Alivia Rowley not been on her game.

“Alivia made some nice saves for us,” Ahlquist said. “On one of the goals she made a diving save, but the rebound went back out to the other team for an easy goal. There were a few goals scored like that.”

Worthingon did have a few chances during the game, but they were unable to capitalize on them to break the shutout.

“Mankato West is a strong team,” Ahlquist said. “But we were not consistant at all. We played them a few weeks ago and lost 1-0 in the last minute of the game.”

Despite the lopsided loss, the Trojans kept their heads held high.

“We did what we could as a team,” Ahlquist said.

Mankato West scored five goals in the first and then added another four in the second to advance to the second round of the section tournament.

“It was definetly a learning experience in my first season as head coach,” Ahlquist said. “There are things as a team that I want to change. But I am looking forward to next season.”
