REDWOOD FALLS — Luverne’s singles player Kaitlin Wohnoutka and the doubles team of Paige Adams and Kynzie Smedsrud both advanced to the second round of the Individual Section 3A tournament with two wins Thursday.

Wohnoutka faced Yellow Medicine East’s Danille Clark in her first match, winning 6-2, 6-0. Wohnoutka then took on Kelle Thompson of Lac qui Parle Valley, winning 6-0, 6-1.

“Kaitlin really played her game today,” LHS coach Greg Antoine said. “She was patient and kept the ball in play until she had the advantage and finished the point or just won the point.”

In other singles action, Emilee Johnson faced LQPV’s Kylie Jahn, losing 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

“Emilee played well but just couldn’t pull it out in the end,” Antoine said.

Adams and Smedsrud played the Fairmont doubles team of Abby Fitzgerald and Sophie Shelgran and won 6-0, 6-1. In their second game of the day, the duo took on Redwood Valley’s Madison Tholkes and Callie Hansen and was able to win a close one, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

“Paige and Kynzie really had two good sets against their first opponents,” Antoine said. “They served very well and then finished the points when they had the opportunity.

“In the second match they continued their good play in the first set but sort of got out of their rhythm in the second set. Then they found it again in time to pull out the third set.”

Luverne’s other doubles team in the tournament was Emily Robinson and Katie Eeten, who lost in the first round to Martin County West’s Shawna Dressen and Emily Lawrence. The scores were 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).

“Emily and Katie seemed to struggle at times playing doubles,” Antoine said. “They played hard but just didn’t get enough points to win.”

Wohnoutka will now face St. James’ Lorena Hernandez Tuesday at the Gustavous tennis bubble in St. Peter. Adams and Smedsrud will also play Tuesday against the winner of the St. James/Montevideo match.
