Letter: Fix property tax inequity, vote for DFLers

If you’re like me, you’ve seen your property taxes skyrocket. We have the Republican majorities in the Minnesota House and Senate to thank for these increases. After shutting down state government for a record 20 days to prevent balancing the budget with a small tax increase on the ultra-wealthy, they forced through a budget that instead transferred costs onto property taxes and eliminated the Homestead Credit.

These property tax increases are worse for those of us in Greater Minnesota. We’re paying nearly two-thirds of the property tax increases in Minnesota, and property taxes on our homes increased eight times higher than for metro homeowners. On average, Greater Minnesota businesses saw an increase three times higher than they saw in the Twin Cities.

These tax hikes are devastating to our families and seniors. Property taxes are also a huge burden for many of our small businesses. But, I guess that’s just the way the GOP looks at things these days. Protect the people who have enough money that they can stand up for themselves, and sock it to the middle class, seniors and small businesses.

On Election Day I am voting for Alan Oberloh and Cheryl Avenel-Navara because they will work for a fair budget that provides needed property tax relief for homeowners, businesses, renters and farmers alike.
