Obituary: Howard McCausland

Howard Dean McCausland, age 82, of Worthington, MN, passed away at 6:39 a.m. on Monday, November 19, 2012, at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center Community Living Center in Sioux Falls, SD.

Howard Dean McCausland, age 82, of Worthington, MN was born on November 26, 1929, in Lake Park, IA, the oldest of 3 children to Dr. Earl and Myrtle Peterson-McCausland. Howard grew up in Lake Park, IA and later moved to Brewster, MN where he graduated from high school. He served 2 years overseas in the Korean War as Corporal from 1951 to 1953.

He married Marilee Algren on June 12, 1955, at First Lutheran Church in Worthington. After marriage, they moved to Lake Park, where he worked at Boyers Market as their meat cutter. They had two daughters, Debra and Barbara. They later moved to Brewster, and he attended Mankato State University. Upon graduating he started working for John Morrell and Company as a salesman then later worked for the Worthington Veterinarian Center. Howard retired in 1991 and enjoyed traveling, golfing, and riding in lots of area parades with the Shriner’s El Riad Oaze Cycle Patrol. He was active in both Masonic Lodges in Worthington and Lake Park. Howard enjoyed helping with the Shrine Circus and volunteered for meals on wheels. He loved golf and was a member at Prairie View Golf Course, where he enjoyed men’s Senior Golf League and his many golfing friends.

On November 21, 2009, Howard married Barbara Burnside in Sioux City, IA and lived in Worthington where they enjoyed each other’s companionship, taking trips, visiting with family and friends, dining out and going for coffee.

Howard Dean McCausland passed away at 6:39 a.m. on Monday, November 19, 2012, at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center Community Living Center in Sioux Falls, SD of stage IV kidney cancer.

He is survived by 2 daughters, Debra (Robert) Horne of Fulda, Barbara (Mark) Opsal of Farmington; and 4 grandchildren, Jason and Jeffrey Horne of Sioux Falls and Emily and Matthew Cullen of Farmington; 1 step-son, Carter (Karen) Burnside of Fremont, NE; and 3 step grandchildren; 1 great grandson; and 1 sister, Margaret (Derald) Hay of Milbank, SD.

He was preceded in death by one infant brother, Robert Lynn in 1937, first wife, Marilee in October of 2007, second wife, Barbara in January of 2012 and his parents.

Memorial service will at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2012, at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with the Rev. Richard Ricker officiating. Burial will be in the Hersey Township Cemetery in Brewster, MN.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2012, with a Masonic Service will be at 10 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
