PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: JCC posts first two victories of year

SLEEPY EYE — The Jackson County Central Huskies girls basketball team had three players in double-digits for the second straight game in a 56-45 win over Sleepy Eye on Saturday at the Sleepy Eye Invitational.

SLEEPY EYE — The Jackson County Central Huskies girls basketball team had three players in double-digits for the second straight game in a 56-45 win over Sleepy Eye on Saturday at the Sleepy Eye Invitational.

JCC scored 38 of its 56 points in the first half, outscoring Sleepy Eye by 17 points. Sleepy Eye tried to make a comeback in the second half, holding the Huskies to just 18 points, but it fell short in the end.

The Huskies forced 35 turnovers, while only turning the ball over 16 times.

Kaylee Burmeister scored a team-high 17 points, while also pulling down 11 rebounds to go along with five assists and four steals for JCC. Lydia Brandt had 14 points and 15 rebounds as well as three steals and teammate Angela Handzus picked up 12 points and six steals. Julia Schumann led the Huskies in assists with seven.

Justine Gonzalez and Josie Schieffert both had 12 points for Sleepy Eye.

The Huskies (2-0) play at St. James on Tuesday.

Fulda 70, Lakeview 44

FULDA — Brittney Hermeling led Fulda with 20 points and five assists in a win over Lakeview on Saturday.

Fulda took a 44-21 lead at halftime and then scored 26 more in the final 16 minutes to cruise to an easy win. The Raiders forced 35 turnovers, while committing just 15 and also made nine 3-pointers in the game.

Amanda Schumacher had 13 points while Melissa Gehl added 10 points, 14 rebounds and six steals. Courtney Tiesler chipped in nine points and five steals and Rachel Cheadle picked up eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Raiders (1-0) travel to Slayton on Dec. 4 to take on Murray County Central.

FRIDAY

JCC 70, St. Mary’s 62

SLEEPY EYE — Rachel Johnson dropped in 17 points for Jackson County Central in a 70-62 win over Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Friday at the Sleepy Eye Invitational.

The Huskies led by one point (32-31) at halftime, but they were able to outscore St. Mary’s 38-31 in the second half for the win.

JCC had two other players who scored in double-digits as Marita Rasche and Lydia Brandt both put up 15 points. Rasche also had five rebounds and six steals. Brandt collected a team-high 17 rebounds.

Johnson picked up five re-bounds and four steals while Angela Handsuz had eight steals and five assists.

Maddy Helget led St. Mary’s with 19 points in the game.
