PREP GIRLS HOCKEY: Marshall tops Worthington in SWC tilt

WORTHINGTON — Despite a 47-save night by Trojan goalie Amanda Bristow, a five-goal second period by the Marshall Tigers was too much for the Worthington girls’ hockey team to overcome in an 8-0 loss Tuesday night.

“I think we did pretty well, but we just need to work on playing better in the second period,” WHS center Shelby Veen said. “That is our weak point right now and we need to do better.”

Morgan Larsen opened up the scoring for the Tigers with a goal at 11:06 in the first period with assists coming from Jessica Blanchard and Hanna Peterson to take an early 1-0 lead.

Marshall took a two-goal lead just under two minutes later on a shot from Peterson that made its way past Bristow. However, the Trojans were able to hold off the Tigers for the rest of the period even while allowing 20 shots on net.

“We did pretty well and we played better than last game for sure,” WHS center Kirsten Aljets said. “But we still need to attack more and block more shots for our goalie.”

The Tigers came out flying in the second, adding five more goals to their lead to make it 7-0. Lizzie Archbold had two goals, while Megan Vogl, Morgan Morril and Peterson all picked up one goal in the second.

“Our play in the second period is both mental and physical for us,” Aljets said. “It is something we have struggled with the past few years. We just really need to figure it out early in the season so we can get a hang of it and fix it sooner.”

Bristow saved another 16 shots in the second to give her a two period total of 34. She would stop another 13 pucks in the last frame to come out with 47 saves in the game.

The Trojans faired a little better in the third period, but Archbold finished off her hat trick with 11:18 left in the period to put the game farther out of reach for the Trojans.

“We attacked more in the first and third,” Aljets said. “We were not just staring at the puck in those periods; we were actually going after it.”

Worthington did have a few chances in the game, but they were few and far between.

“We need to take more shots on offense and put more pressure on the other team if we want to get better,” Veen said. “And I think we also need to block more shots for our goalies.”

The Trojans host the Luverne Cardinals Thursday in the first game of a girls/boys doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m. in Worthington.
