ADRIAN DRAGONS

Coach: Randy Strand

Experience: 27th season.

2011-12 Record: 19-7 overall; 11-5 Red Rock Conference (third place); 10-5 Section 3A.

2012 Postseason: Lost to Southwest Christian in Section 3A South semifinal.

Players Graduated: Sydne Springman, Austyn Thier, Nichole Loosbrock, Nina Weidert.

Players Returning: Elissa Thier, Sr., G; Rachel Kontz, Sr., G; Carly Wolf, Sr., G; Jordin Kopplow, Sr., G; Courtney Vaske, Sr., C; Brooke Wenzel, Sr., F; Bailey Grussing, Jr., C; Nicole Slater, Jr., C; Shelly Loosbrock, Jr., F; Marissa Veld, Jr., G; Elizabeth Thier, So., G; Katie Wieneke, So., F.

New Players: None.

Strengths: The Dragons will have depth in the backcourt and six seniors to provide leadership.

Weaknesses: Adrian, while having plenty of players at the guard and forward positions, lacks overall team size with no player taller than 5-foot-9.

Outlook: The Dragons hope to overcome their lack of height by battling on defense to stay in games. Adrian has won at least 16 games in each of the past six seasons with its last conference championship coming in the 2008-2009 season.

New Players: Ruth Cheadle, Fr., F; Randi Tiesler, 8th, G; Courtney Zins, 8th, F; Madison Dibble, So., G; Katelyn Renneke, Fr., C.

Strengths: The Raiders will have depth this year and should receive strong post play. Fulda also has plenty of girls that can shoot the ball. Slaathaug said that the girls accept their roles on the team.

Weaknesses: Replacing Courtney Hulstein, who scored over 2,000 points and dished out more than 600 assists for Fulda, will be a challenge.

Outlook: With returning all-conference post players Rachel Cheadle and Melissa Gehl leading a talented roster, the Raiders will be in the running for another league title. Fulda is defending back-to-back Red Rock Conference championships.

New Players: Macey Zeinstra, Jr., G; Tianna Top, So., C; Savannah Tinklenberg, So., G; Alexis Knutson, So., G.

Strengths: The Eagles will have size in the post along with fast guards.

Weaknesses: Southwest Christian likes to play an up-tempo style that uses fastbreaks to create points. The Eagles must learn to know when to run and stay in control of the ball.

Outlook: Southwest Christian fell one game short of returning to the state tournament for the first time since the 2009-2010 season. A returning cast featuring six seniors should help the Eagles remain competitive in the Red Rock Conference and into the postseason.

New Players: Hannah Schmidt, Jr., G.

Strengths: MCC return three senior starters that will provide leadership on and off the court. Jenson is confident that the Rebels’ post play will be strong if they play smart defensively.

Weaknesses: The Rebels are not a strong shooting team and will need to find ways to score on offense.

Outlook: Jenson wants the Rebels to focus on their game and to improve throughout the season. MCC, which won the Red Rock Conference in the 2009-2010 season, wants to be in the position to contend for the conference title and earn a high seed in the postseason.

New Players: Devin Bloemendaal, So., G; Marisa Fey, So., G; Breanna Nelson, So., G; Kameron Kroh, So., G; Jessica Jasper, So., F.

Strengths: All-conference guard Everett leads a group of six seniors that helped the Flying Dutchmen to 14 wins last season. Edgerton will try to use its speed to its advantage.

Weaknesses: Edgerton will be without Schaap and Gunnink due to injuries, which will limit the Flying Dutchmen’s depth at guard and presence in the post.

Outlook: The Flying Dutchmen will play aggressive on both sides of the ball in an up-tempo style of play aimed to create mismatches.

Strengths: Comnick and Wahl provide the Chargers with interior size as each is 5-foot-10 inches tall. W-WG also has some quick, young guards.

Weaknesses: The Chargers bench will be young.

Outlook: Coach Woelber hopes her squad can stay healthy and avoid injuries to improve on last year’s success.

Strengths: The Panthers have an athletic squad that has good rapport on the court. Ellsworth has players that can drive to the hoop and score and the players have been picking up on Thielen’s system.

Weaknesses: Ellsworth is working on improving its man-to-man defense, while also striving to limit turnovers and opposing second-chance shots.

Outlook: The Panthers will be a quick and athletic team. While Ellsworth doesn’t have much depth, Thielen expects her girls to be competitive and to give 100-percent in every game.

Strengths: Engen returns to play her senior season after missing last year due to knee surgery. Dauer’s squad features three seniors and five juniors that have played together for many years.

Weaknesses: Dauer has Red Rock Central working on becoming more fundamentally sound as a team.

Outlook: Coming off back-to-back losing seasons, the Falcons are hoping to improve upon their overall record and become more of threat in the Red Rock Conference.

Strengths: All-conference guard Courtney Place returns an average of 14 points and five rebounds per game to the Wildcats, who should be a stonger and faster squad with better depth than last year.

Weaknesses: Place looks to see the Wildcats improve in every facet of the game in order to improve upon last season’s five wins.

Outlook: Last year, Round Lake-Brewster played girls basketball with Southwest Star Concept as the Quasars. This season, the schools have merged all sports programs to become the Southwestern United Wildcats. The program’s most recent success was back-to-back Red Rock Conference championships in the 2006-2007 and the 2007-2008 seasons.

New Players: Madison Fick, So., G; Tori Bork, So., G; Kayla Thone, So., G; Kelli Esselink, So., C.

Strengths: The Patriots return a lot of experience with strong senior leadership. H-BC will feature a good blend of size and ability on the inside, as well good play from the guards in the backcourt. Blosmo said his girls work well as a unit, especially on defense.

Weaknesses: The team’s shooting percentage is an area where the Patriots have struggled. Blosmo mentioned that the girls had great offseason workouts and have worked hard to improve their shots.

Outlook: Blosmo is pleased with the work and the improvement the Patriots have shown during a “great offseason.” The Patriots hope to keep improving and surprise some teams in the Red Rock Conference. Hills-Beaver Creek’s last winning season was a 17-9 record in 2004-2005.

Strengths: Peters, a 6-foot-1 all-conference post, returns to lead a roster of five seniors and eight juniors.

Weaknesses: This is the first year for Mountain Lake Area as the cooperative agreement between Mountain Lake and Butterfield-Odin ended. Mountain Lake has joined forces with Mountain Lake Christian.

Outlook: Last season’s five wins included a win in the first-round of the postseason. The Wolverines are hungry to improve upon last season’s mark in their first year under Klassen.
