PREP BASKETBALL: Huskies claim season opener

EAST CHAIN — Jon Harmening produced a 24-point, 16-rebound double-double Monday night, sparking the Jackson County Central Huskies to a season-opening 70-56 victory over the Granada-Huntley-East Chain Mustangs in a non-conference high school boys basketball game.

EAST CHAIN — Jon Harmening produced a 24-point, 16-rebound double-double Monday night, sparking the Jackson County Central Huskies to a season-opening 70-56 victory over the Granada-Huntley-East Chain Mustangs in a non-conference high school boys basketball game.

Taylor Christopher (15 points) and Shadrack Wacker (12 points) each dished out six assists for the Huskies, who outscored the Mustangs 41-28 in the second half to pull away from a slim 29-28 halftime lead.

Konnor Kristenson and Josh Johanson scored 16 and 13 points, respectively, to lead G-H-EC (0-2).

JCC hosts Mountain Lake Area Thursday night.

Central Lyon 44, Ellsworth 39

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa — Central Lyon held Ellsworth to just three points in the first quarter Monday night, securing a 44-39 victory in a non-conference high school boys’ basketball game.

Justin Kruse led Ellsworth (0-3) with 14 points. Mitch Leuthold had nine points and eight rebounds, while Dan Kramer came up with four steals for the Panthers.

Ellsworth hosts Southwest Christian Dec. 11.

GIRLS

Central Lyon 64, Ellsworth 44

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa — Kori Schulte’s 20-point, 10-rebound double-double helped lift the Central Lyon Lions to a 64-44 victory over the Ellsworth Panthers in a non-conference high school girls basketball game Monday night.

Kelsey Ackerman scored 16 points for CL, while Lexi Ackerman charted 11 points, six assists and five steals. Sarah Halse also scored 11 points for the Lions.

Alexa Huisman led Ellsworth with 15 points, while Bridget Kramer and Amber Walkowaik added 14 and 11 points, respectively.

CL (3-1) hosts rival West Lyon tonight, while Ellsworth (0-2) plays at Adrian Friday.
