FORT DODGE, Iowa — Greg Gainey and Jerrell Ferguson picked up the only points for the Minnesota West Bluejay wrestling team in a 46-6 loss to the Iowa Central Tritons Wednesday.
“Iowa Central is ranked No. 2 in the country in national junior college polls, so I’m pleased with winning two matches,” MW coach Bob Purcell said. “Going in I’d hoped we would compete, but I’m pleased with how we did. It lets us know what we need to do to get better.”
The Tritons’ Tristan Bundy defeated the Bluejays John Bush at 125-pounds by major decision, 16-4. At 133-pounds, Tyler Reiste of IC won by forfeit, while Matt Magner was pinned by Frank Cagnina in 1 minute, 38 seconds.
“I’m pleased with the wins, but not so much with the score of the dual,” Purcell said.
Kris Lehman pinned the Bluejays Mike Tanner in 3:16. MW’s Jadon Evans lost to IC’s Devin Geohegan at 157-pounds by pin in 2:30. Dillon Geohegan won his match at 165-pounds by forfeit.
Gainey won by decision at 165-pound over the Tritons’ Cody Harrison, 6-4. Ferguson won at 184-pound when he defeated Joe Stanton by decision, 5-2.
“Greg is one of the guys we look to every meet to come out with a win,” Purcell said. “As Ferguson gets more experience he will get even better. He has improved a lot since the first meet and we hope he can win consistently for us in the future.”
In the last two duals of the day, Billie Behle (197-pounds) and Chris Balard (285) both won for the Tritons, with Behle winning by forfeit and Balard winning by pin in 1 minute 47 seconds over Tavaras Poindexter.
The Bluejays next meet is Jan. 12 at the Ridgewater Open.
