LUVERNE — Makayla Sterrett posted a hat trick and three other Luverne players each scored twice as the Cardinals routed Windom Area 11-3 on Thursday.
The Cardinals, who scored five times apiece in the first and second periods, were led by Sterrett, who had all three of her goals during the first 34 minutes.
She scored with 3:28 left in the first period to give Luverne a 4-2 lead. Sterrett tallied her second goal with 14:26 remaining in the second period. Her final goal came exactly 4 minutes later.
Windom Area built leads of 1-0 and 2-1. Jolyssa Higley-Purrington recorded a goal with 14:24 left in the first period before Luverne’s Morgan Hohn had the first of her two goals, tying the game 32 seconds later. Kaylee Janssen handed the Eagles a 2-1 cushion at the 13:31 mark.
But Hohn scored again with 6:57 showing in the first period before Sterrett struck for the first time and Madison Crabtree followed with a goal at the 3:28 mark as the Cardinals led 5-2.
Luverne tallied the first five goals of the second period to take a 10-2 advantage. Sterrett posted her final two goals, Madisyn Dingmann scored twice in the frame and Mariah Aukes added a tally.
The Eagles’ only answer to Luverne’s onslaught was a goal from Addison Beaty with 3:05 left.
The Cardinals’ Madi Oye capped the scoring with 7:10 left.
Kennedy Gonnerman stopped 8 of 11 shots to become the winning goaltender. Emily Steen made 41 saves on 52 shots in a losing effort.
