Obituary: Daniel Kunkel

Daniel Niel Kunkel, 66, was born on October 18, 1946 in Mound City, MO, the son of Samuel and Sara (Forney) Kunkel. He married Pam Mahn on January 29, 1977 in LeSeuer, MN. Dan taught at Laurens-Marathon Schools Laurens, IA 1973-1983 (7-12 Instrumental); Brookfield School Brookfield, MO 1983-1985 (9-12 Instrumental); North Platte Schools Dearborn, MO 1985-1991 (7-12 Instrumental & Vocal); SV-RL-Brewster Schools Round Lake, MN 1992-2006 (7-12 Instrumental & Vocal) 2003-2006 (Dean of Students); 2006-2007 Truman High School Truman, MN (Principal). Dan retired in 2007 and started driving Charter Bus for Reading Bus Line in 2007 to present. He loved bicycling, golfing, fishing, cross-stitching, watching all kinds of sports events – soccer of late and baseball, woodworking, and recently listening to Celtic Thunder and Celtic Women Music. He also enjoyed reading Andrew Greeley books and participating in the Old Fashioned Fourth of July at the Red Garter Saloon at Pioneer Village. Dan died on Friday, December 14, 2012, at the Sanford Worthington Medical Center in Worthington, MN.

Dan is survived by his wife, Pamela Mahn Kunkel, Round Lake/St Peter; son, Zebedee Kunkel (Jaci [Stoulil]), grandson, Nolan, St. Paul, MN; brother, Ronnie (Jackie) Kunkel, Oregon, MO; sisters, Sue Gragg, Sandspring, OK, Kathy Gruetze (Bob), Coredova, AK, and Ellen Kunkel, Mound City, MO, and nephews and nieces, Kelly (Michelle) Kunkel, Greg (Rexanne) Kunkel, Nathan Kunkel (Sheila) – Oregon, MO and Scott (Caroline), Hiawatha, KS, David (Heather) Lawrence, Newport News, VA and Doug Lawrence, Tulsa, OK, Jeff (Nobuko) Gruetze, Sapporo, Japan, Jennie (Hisanori) Murasawa, Melbourne, Australia and Sarah Gruetze, Portland, OR, and Zeb’s godfather, Bill Grice, Spirit Lake, IA.

He was preceded in death by parents, Sam and Sara (Forney) Kunkel, sister, Rebecca Lynn Kunkel, brother-in-law, Ralph Gragg, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Grace Mahn, and Zeb’s godmother, Gloria Grice.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel in Worthington, MN, with Mark Yackel-Juleen officiating.

Arrangements are with the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
