WORTHINGTON — Despite a hat trick by Betsy Thompson, the Trojan girls’ hockey team fell 17-3 to the Fairmont Cardinals Tuesday.

The Cardinals got on the board early and often in the first period with Jalyssa Wilson picking up four straight goals to put Fairmont up 4-0. Two more goals put the Cardinals up by six in the waning seconds of the period.

However, the Trojans got a jolt of life when Thompson netted the first of her three goals with 8 seconds left in the first.

Worthington defenseman Allison Kremer led a 2-on-1 charge into the Fairmont zone, pulling both defender and goalie off to the left side of the ice. Kremer then found Thompson on backdoor for the goal.

The Cardinals piled on eight more goals in the second with Thompson picking up the only goal for the Trojans in the period.

Through two frames, Worthington goalie Bailey Kruse had faced 22 shots, while the Trojans were only able to put up three shots of their own.

Fairmont put another three pucks in the net in the third period to extend its lead to 15, but a late goal by Thompson (assisted by Kremer) gave Worthington a goal in the last frame as well.

The Trojans (0-6, 0-3) travels to Blaine to take part in the Schwan Cup Tournament on Dec. 27 where they will face Northern Lakes.

Fairmont 6 8 3 — 17

Worthington 1 1 1 — 3
