WORTHINGTON — Class A fourth-ranked Wabasso/Red Rock Central dominated Quad County and Worthington in wrestling duals Tuesday. The Bobcats began the triangular meet with a 66-4 thrashing of the Sting before toppling the Trojans 52-9 in the nightcap. In between, Quad County defeated Worthington 38-35.

“We came here and did what we had to do and we saw some good things from our guys,” Wabasso/Red Rock Central coach Brett Bartholomaus said. “We wrestled well on our feet and were attacking a little harder and a little smarter than in our matches last weekend. It’s what we talked about in practice.”

The Bobcats, who feature six ranked wrestlers, are 5-0 in duals this season. Wabasso/Red Rock Central won the team title at the Red River Riot on Saturday at Redwood Falls.

The Sting evened its record at 3-3, while the Trojans have a 1-4 mark.

Nine different Bobcats won a match in each dual. They included Derek Christians (decision, pin at 132), T.J. Fulton (two pins at 138), Dominic Ourada (two pins at 145), Tanner Rohlik (two pins at 152), Blake Altermatt (pin, technical fall at 160), Mitchell Schroepfer (two decisions at 170), Jordan Schroepfer (pin, decision at 182), Brian Hagberg (major decision, decision at 220) and Alex Schroepfer (two pins at 285).

“I think we are starting to wrestle smarter,” Bartholomaus said. “This first month of the season, you never know what you’re going to get, especially from younger guys. In the past, we were giving up points at the end of periods. Now, we are starting to minimize those mistakes.”

According to The Guillotine, Christians is ranked seventh at 132, T.J. Fulton is rated fourth at 138, Rohlik is ranked second at 152, Altermatt is rated sixth at 160 and Alex Schroepfer is ranked second at 285.

Other Wabasso/Red Rock Central victories came from 196-pounder Mitchell Fulton (pin versus Quad County), 113-pounder Brakken Bierl (a 14-12 decision in overtime against Worthington’s Hser Moo Pwae), 120-pounder Spencer Jenniges (technical fall versus Quad County), 126-pounder Josh Altermatt (a decision against Quad County) and 195-pounder Brady Bierl (a pin versus Quad County).

Worthington received 2-0 efforts from Hser Eh Pwae (two decisions at 106), Anthony Luft (technical fall, decision at 126) and Carsen Hagen (pin at 220 and triple overtime decision at 195).

Blake Schroeder (170), Zach Kempema (182) and Joe Pavelko (195) won their matches against Quad County.

“I think the effort was there, but we gave up too many bonus points,” Worthington coach Mark Prunty said. “In some cases, we’re asking a lot from our eighth- and ninth-grade wrestlers in the middle of our lineup. They are giving it all they have in some tough weight classes.”

Prunty said Worthington wrestled against two quality opponents, but found an area that the Trojans need to improve.

“We need to work on getting out from underneath,” Prunty said. “We have been working on it this year, but we need to work on it more.”

Luft, a junior who is a two-time placer at the MSHSL State Tournament, is 13-1 for Worthington.

“During the matches, Coach Prunty has been stressing to me to keep moving and keep the pace going pretty fast,” said Luft, who is ranked fifth in the state at 113 in Class AA. “It plays to my strength of being on my feet and throwing opponents off.”
