CURRIE — Louise Gervais doesn’t expect that she’ll get together with all the members of her large family this Christmas season. But they’ll still be with her nonetheless.

On Louise’s Christmas tree hangs an angel ornament representing each family member — her eight children, 25 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and all the spouses that have joined the clan. Her husband passed away 10 years ago, but he’s there, too.

“I put all of my little angels on the tree, so now my tree has 73 angels, from my husband and me all the way down to the last grandchildren,” explained Louise.

The angel tree tradition started about 25 years ago, Louise estimates. She orders the ornaments from the Miles Kimball catalog. The angels have changed over the years, so they’re not all identical, but Louise feels that makes each new addition more special.

“I just keep adding every year,” she said. “As someone gets married, I add a new one. As the babies come, I keep adding all the time. Then, when they come for Christmas, the little ones have to go to the tree and find where their little angel is on the tree, that Grandma didn’t forget them.”

In addition to the angels, Louise finishes out her tree with gold ornaments and trims that make the tree sparkle. Members of her 500 card club recently commented about the beautiful effect it creates.

“It takes a while to get them all up,” Louise said. “It’s a tall, narrow tree, so to get to every branch and get everybody on there so they can all be seen takes quite a while, but it’s worth it.”
