PREP GIRLS HOCKEY: Cardinals get a win at the Schwan Cup Tournament

BLAINE — A hat trick by Makayla Sterrett powered the Luverne girls hockey team to a 7-4 victory over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday in the opening round of the girls White Division at the Schwan Cup Tournament.

Luverne outshot LP-GE/W-DC 34-20 and took just one penalty in the whole game.

Sterrett picked up her first goal 8 minutes, 27 seconds into the opening frame on a pass from Madisyn Dingmann and Madilyn Oye to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. But LP-GE/W-DC’s Morgan Zeise scored less than 2 minutes later to even the game at one goal apiece.

Dingmann gave Luverne back the lead at 11:43 in the second, but LP-GE/W-DC evened things at two on Zeise’s second goal of the game.

The Cardinals once again went up by one on Sterrett’s second goal of the game with less than 3 minutes left in the second. However, Samantha Killian scored for LP-GE/W-DC under a minute later to tie the game at three heading into the second intermission.

Luverne put up four goals in the third to pull away from LP-GE/W-DC. Brooke Umland scored the only goal for LP-GE/W-DC in the third, while Sterrett, Dingmann, Monique Aanenson and Morgan Hohn all scored for the Cardinals in the last period.

Cardinals’ goalie Kennedy Gonnerman made 16 saves on 20 shots in the game and LP-GE/W-DC goalie Angela Hanson made 27 saves on 34 shots.

Luverne plays North Metro today in the second round of the Schwan Cup Tournament.

BLAINE — An 11 goal first period for Northern Lakes sunk the Worthington Trojans Thursday in the first round of the Schwan Cup Tournament in the girls Green Division.

The Trojans mustered just two shots in the whole game, while Northern Lakes put 47 on Worthington goalie Amanda Bristow. Bristow made 34 saves and Northern Lakes goalie Kat Jensen made one save on two shots.

The 11-goal first period for Northern Lakes made it 11-0 heading into the first intermission. Both Sam Henrichs and Kaylyn Eggena scored two goals in the period for Northern Lakes.

Alex Palm made it 12-0 with her goal in the second and Britta Brittner scored short-handed in the third to give Nothern Lakes a 13 goal advantage.

The Trojans only goal came on a penalty shot made by Allison Kremer with a minute left in the game.

Worthington moves on to the consolation bracket to face the loser of the St. Francis/Watertown game today in the second round of the Schwan Cup Tournament.

Waseca 8, WA 0

WASECA — Windom Area goalie Emily Steen made 57 saves on 65 shots in a loss to the Waseca Bluejays in the girls Waseca Holiday Tournament Thursday.

The Eagles took five total shots over three periods and were unable to get a shot on net in the third period.

A goal by the Bluejays Abbe Hoehn 13 minutes, 30 seconds into the first period put Waseca up by one.

The Bluejays put together a five goal effort in the second period to put the game out of reach. Taryn Juberien (two goals), Maddy Knoll, Olivia McIntosh and Alicia Knoll all scored in the second for Waseca.

McIntosh and Averi Dahlberg scored in the third period for the Bluejays to make it 8-0.

The Eagles take on Faribault today in the second round of the Waseca Holiday Tournament.
