Obituary: Marvin Titus

On December 26, 2012, Marvin Titus passed away at Sunset Cottage in Worthington at the age of 87 years, three months, and eighteen days.

Marvin Darnell Titus was born on September 8, 1925 on the family farm in rural Okabena, Minnesota to Leslie Vroman and Hazel Catherine (Yetter) Titus. He was baptized and confirmed in the Okabena United Methodist Church. Marv attended country school until 8th grade and graduated from Okabena High School in 1943. He then attended Worthington Junior College for two years. He began to farm the family farm after completing college. While attending a dance at the Roof Garden in Arnold’s Park, Iowa he met Dorothy Burnside, the two were married on December 27, 1957 at the Presbyterian Church in Lake Park, Iowa. Together they had three children, Leslie, Tracy, and John. Marv and Dorothy enjoyed dancing, playing cards with neighbors and attending plays at the Okoboji Summer Theatre together. Dorothy passed away on January 31, 1972. Marv retired from farming in 1980 and moved into Lakefield to take up employment with Great Plains Supply until they closed. At that time he became self employed as a handy man and carpenter. In February of 2010, Marv moved into Doman Rose Assisted Living. On December 26, 2012, Marvin Titus passed away at Sunset Cottage in Worthington at the age of 87 years, three months, and eighteen days.

Marvin was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lakefield, were he was very involved in many aspects. Marv was a very community oriented person; he was on the Okabena School Board, a 4-H Adult Leader and was on the Jackson County Historical Society Board all for many years. He was a 50-year Mason, being awarded the Hiram Award in 2003. Also in 2003, he earned the Jackson County Outstanding Senior Citizen Award. When he was able, he volunteered nearly every day at Senior Dining, doing the dishes. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s concerts and all types of sporting events, cheering on the community children. Marv was excellent at woodcrafts and woodworking in general, making many gifts for his grandchildren. He was a handyman for his family and the church. Marv was a very patient man, doing everything right the first time.

Marvin is survived by his two daughters Leslie (Dan) Jensen of Worthington and Tracy (Terry) Wheeler of Wakefield; six grandchildren Latina (Jeff) Nickel, Amanda (Jesse) Stahl, Alicia Jensen, Sophia (Chad) Markus, Heather (Marty Gabel) Wheeler, and Jamie Wheeler; six great-grandchildren Jaden, Spenser, Tayler, Trey, Khloe, and Violet; three sisters-in-law Gayle Titus of Jackson, Margaret Titus of Cottage Grove, and Irene Jansen of Milford; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his good friend Mary Ann Pomerenke of Lakefield.

Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy, his son John, two brothers Wayne and Dale, and his sister Margaret Ourada.

Marvin D. Titus, 87, of Lakefield, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at Sunset Cottage in Worthington, Minnesota. A funeral service for Marv will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 10:30 AM at First United Methodist Church in Lakefield with Pastor Kathy Brandt officiating. Burial will be at Lakefield City Cemetery.

A visitation will be held on Friday, December 28, 2012 from 5 to 7 PM at Osterberg-Hansen Funeral in Lakefield with a Masonic Service at 6:45 PM. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
