BLAINE — After losing their first two games at the Schwan Cup Tournament, the Luverne Cardinals boys hockey team dominated Winona 8-1 to claim seventh place Friday.
Chaz Smedsrud put Luverne up 1-0 on goal assisted by Gunnar Olson 1 minutes, 47 seconds into the game. Toby Sengvongxay gave the Cardinals a two point advantage seven minutes later on his unassisted goal.
Logan Norman scored the first of his two goals in the game to make it 3-0 in favor of Luverne.
Skyler Wenninger put the puck past Wyatt Hamernik to give the Cardinals a four goal lead halfway through the second period.
Logan Norman made it 5-0 for Luverne on his second goal of the game with 6:40 left in the second.
The Cardinals opened the third period with two more goals just 3 minutes apart to push their lead to seven. Smedsrud picked up his second goal at 14:39, while Olson added a power-play goal 5 minutes, 19 seconds into the third.
Winona got on the board on a Ryan Grant goal at 8:11 to make it 7-1. But Jonny Solma scored to give the Cardinals back their seven point advantage.
Luverne (6-3) heads to Marshall to take on the Tigers Thursday.
