PEE WEE HOCKEY: Pee Wees tie Windom, New Ulm/Sleepy Eye

WORTHINGTON — The Worthington Pee Wee B hockey team came away with two ties this past weekend at the Worthington Arena against Windom and New Ulm/Sleepy Eye (NUSE).

The Trojans faced the Windom Eagles Pee Wee team Saturday, a game that ended in a 6-6 tie. Windom’s Ethan Becker and Noah Kloss scored goals to start the game, but then Worthington answered with three consecutive goals. Kody Honius picked up the first goal at the end of the first period, with Max Carlson assisting on the goal. Half way through the second period Parker Valen notched a goal for the Trojans, with assists going to Carlson and Honius. And Anthony Fogelman ended the Trojans’ streak with a goal off a pass from Ryan Newman.

Tylan Porath and Becker scored consecutive goals for the Eagles to put the Trojans behind 4-3 going into the third period. But Worthington answered with goals by Honius and Newman to regain the lead. The teams then traded goals, one by Windom’s Becker and another by Worthington’s Heidebrink and the Trojans were only seconds away from earning the win when Porath scored his second goal of the game with 18 seconds remaining to tie the game for the Eagles.

The Eagles outshot the Trojans 24-22. Sam Fellows made 18 saves in net for the Trojans.

In their second game of the weekend, the Trojans battled the NUSE Eagles to a 5-5 tie Sunday. These Eagles opened the game with two goals in the first three minutes of the game, putting the Trojans in an early 2-0 hole. Worthington battled back, however, and scored two goals, both credited to Heidebrink.

Heading into the second period, Worthington trailed 3-1 and was outshot 14-3, when the NUSE goalie allowed a deflected puck to fall over his shoulder for a goal. The Trojans Max Carlson scored three straight goals to earn a hat trick and stake the Trojans to a 5-3 lead. Worthington outshot NUSE 12-9 in the second period.

Carlson had a chance for a fourth straight goal in the third period when his wrist shot beat the NUSE goalie but clanked off the pipe and directly over to an Eagle defenseman, who lead the charge back up the ice for a goal. NUSE scored the game-tying goal with three minutes left and despite a last-second shot on net by Honius the game ended in a 5-5 tie. NUSE outshot Worthington 33-21 over the course of the game. Carter Ponto made 28 saves in net for the Trojans to earn the tie.

The Trojans’ record moves to 8-3-2 on the season, and they are currently 4-2-2 and in first place in Minnesota Hockey District 4 league play with league games yet to play at Windom and home against Fairmont. Worthington’s next game is at the Winona Pee Wee B Tournament this Saturday and Sunday with a possible home game with Sioux Center sometime this weekend.
