GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Place helps Wildcats stun W-WG

WESTBROOK — Trailing by two points with 9.6 seconds to play, Courtney Place buried a 3-pointer right before the buzzer to give the Southwestern United Wildcats a 45-44 Red Rock Conference victory over the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers in girls basketball action Thursday night.

Place finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wildcats to their second victory of the season. Sarah Baumgard totaled nine points for SWU (2-7, 2-2), while Kailey Wendland filled the charts with eight points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Autumn Hinkeldey added three steals for the Wildcats.

W-WG (4-6, 3-3), which held a six-point lead going into the final 4 minutes of action, couldn’t get a shot off following Place’s game-winner. Paige Erickson paced the Chargers with 15 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, two steals and a shot block. Abby Herding added eight points, while Elizabeth Woelber totaled seven points, four assists and three steals for W-WG.

The Chargers made 16 of 25 foul shots in the contest, while the Wildcats converted 9 of their 18 chances from the stripe.

Both teams return to action Tuesday. Southwestern United hosts Southwest Christian, while Westbrook-Walnut Grove travels to Hills-Beaver Creek

Fulda 63, Mountain Lake Area 31

FULDA — The Fulda Raiders outscored the Mountain Lake Area Wolverines by 16 points in each half to earn a Red Rock Conference girls’ basketball victory Thursday night.

Rachel Cheadle paced the Raiders’ effort with a 19-point, 15-rebound double-double, while also collecting six steals. Melissa Gehl added 18 points and seven rebounds, Amanda Schumacher charted 14 counters and Sariah Cheadle (five rebounds) facilitated the Fulda offense with nine assists.

Stacey Harder and Brianna Soutthivong each scored nine points to lead Mountain Lake Area (5-4, 2-2), which plays at Windom in a non-conference game Saturday.

Fulda (10-2, 5-1) hosts Worthington in a non-conference clash Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Southwest Christian 82, Ellsworth 51

EDGERTON — Amber Pater scored 29 points to lead the Southwest Christian Eagles to a Red Rock Conference win over the Ellsworth Panthers Thursday.

Morgan Van Hulzen (14), Jennifer Schmidt (12) and Savannah Tinklenberg (10) also reached double-digit scoring for the Eagles. Tianna Top topped the rebounding chart with nine, while Pater, Van Hulzen and Schmidt each collected eight caroms. Schmidt also added five assists and three steals, while Hannah Van Dyke dished out four assists.

The Panthers had a trio of girls reach double-figure scoring with Alexa Huisman leading the way with 20 points. Bridget Kramer and Amber Walkowaik added 16 and 10 points, respectively. Huisman also totaled eight rebounds and four assists, while Kramer finished with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Southwest Christian (5-4, 4-0) plays Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Saturday at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, while Ellsworth (4-7, 1-4) hosts Harris-Lake Park on Monday.

Edgerton 64, Murray County Central 50

EDGERTON — A balanced scoring effort helped the Edgerton Flying Dutchmen claim their first victory of the season with a Red Rock Conference win over the Murray County Central Rebels Thursday.

Sarah Post and Jessica Menning scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Tara DeKam and Tanner Gunnink each scored 11.

Gunnink completed a double-double with 11 rebounds, while Menning collected eight boards and three steals, Post dished out five assists and grabbed three steals, and DeKam had six rebounds and blocked five shots.

Taylor Schreier posted a game-high 14 points for the Rebels, while Jenna Ness added 12 points.

The Dutchmen committed 18 turnovers and forced 23 Rebel turnovers in the contest.

Both teams play league games Tuesday. Edgerton (1-8, 1-5) travels to Ellsworth, while Murray County Central (3-5, 3-3) hosts Adrian.

Adrian 42, Hills-Beaver Creek 26

HILLS —Jordin Kopplow collected 10 rebounds, six steals and five assists as Adrian defeated Hills-Beaver Creek in a Red Rock Conference game Thursday.

The Dragons built a 29-12 halftime lead before the Patriots won the second half 14-13.

Brooke Wenzel scored eight points to lead Adrian, which improved to 8-2 overall and 5-0 against the Red Rock Conference.

Paige Luethold led Hills-Beaver Creek with eight points as the Patriots became 4-5 overall and 2-4 in league play. Hattie Van Wyhe added 10 rebounds for H-BC.

Marshall 73, Windom 33

MARSHALL — Eleven Tigers scored, led by Hannah Bennett’s 18 points, as Marshall defeated the Windom Eagles in Southwest Conference play Thursday.

Gina Hauge scored a game-high 20 points to lead Windom. Holly Larson collected eight rebounds for the Eagles, while Hauge had seven boards and Rachel Sorensen grabbed four steals.

Windom (5-5, 2-2) hosts Mountain Lake Area on Saturday at 3 p.m.
