GIRLS HOCKEY: LP-GE hands loss to Luverne

LUVERNE — Makayla Sterrett scored the first two goals of the game, but Luverne gave up five unanswered tallies during a 5-2 girls hockey loss to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on Friday.

LUVERNE — Makayla Sterrett scored the first two goals of the game, but Luverne gave up five unanswered tallies during a 5-2 girls hockey loss to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on Friday.

The Cardinals led 2-0 after Sterrett scored with 8:08 left in the first period and again less than 4 minutes later.

But a goal from Morgan Ziese cut Long Prairie-Grey Eagle’s deficit to 2-1 after 17 minutes.

Brooke Umland, Ashlee Helseth and Halley Maas all scored second-period goals as Long Prairie-Grey Eagle grabbed a 4-2 lead.

Samantha Killian capped the scoring in the third period.

Luverne lost despite holding a 36-24 edge in shots on-goal.

Cardinals’ goalie Kennedy Gonnerman made 19 saves on 24 shots in the loss.
