PREP BOYS HOCKEY: Luverne tops Fairmont

LUVERNE — Connor Crabtree picked up a nine-save shutout for the Luverne Cardinals in an 8-0 win over the Fairmont Cardinals Tuesday. Luverne outshot Fairmont throughout the game and converted on one of two power-plays.

LUVERNE — Connor Crabtree picked up a nine-save shutout for the Luverne Cardinals in an 8-0 win over the Fairmont Cardinals Tuesday.

Luverne outshot Fairmont throughout the game and converted on one of two power-plays.

Austin Maxwell and Chaz Smedsrud both scored in the first period to give Luverne a 2-0 lead early in the game.

Cole Desplinter gave the Cardinals a three goal lead with just under 7 minutes left in the second, while Skyler Wenninger and Gunnar Olson both scored in the period to make it 5-0 Luverne.

The Cardinals scored three more goals in the third to extend their lead to eight with Toby Sengvongxay, Desplinter and Olson picking up goals.

Luverne (9-4) hosts Windom Area Thursday, Jan. 17.

Marshall 3, Worthington 0

MARSHALL — The Worthington Trojans fell to the Marshall Tigers in a Southwest Conference boys hockey game Tuesday.

Neither team scored on the power play, with the Tigers going 0-for-2 and the Trojans missing on three chances.

With no score in the first period, the Tigers got on the board early in the second on an Austin Leek goal 17 seconds in to the period. Marshall made it 2-0 on a Leo Zerr goal with less than a minute left in the second.

The Tigers added to their lead in the third with a goal from Quinn Horvath to make give Marshall a three-goal cushion.

The Trojans (1-9, 0-6) host Fairmont Thursday.
