OKABENA — Utilizing an 18-1 run over a seven-minute stretch of the first half Thursday evening, Southwestern United changed a 12-12 tie into a 30-13 lead and then withstood several surges by Murray County Central to claim a 54-50 victory in a Red Rock Conference boys’ basketball game.
The winning Wildcats (3-5, 1-3) had three players score in double figures and five boys combine for a total of 44 rebounds as they won their first conference game of the season.
Zach Schumacher, who made five-of-seven key free throws in the second half, finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Andrew Kramer (seven steals, three assists) notched 11 points and Brandon Thurk played a stellar game with 10 timely points and a game-high 14 rebounds, including 12 on the defensive end.
Aaron Fest (nine rebounds, three assists), Justin Jass (eight rebounds) and Levi Taylor (six rebounds) also hit the boards hard for the Wildcats, who held a 33-21 lead at intermission.
Sam Erickson (seven rebounds, four steals) scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the second half to lead the Rebels, while Jack Thony filled up the MCC stat sheet with six rebounds, five steals, four assists, a block and six points.
Seth Bass contributed 12 points and a trio of steals for the Rebels (2-7, 2-4), while Cole Bly scored eight points.
MCC sliced SWU’s lead to five points a couple of times midway into the second half, but the Wildcats opened up a 42-31 advantage and were up 50-39 before the Rebels scored 11 points in the game’s last minute.
A rebound basket by Bass was followed by a trio of 3-pointers — one by Bass and two by Erickson — as MCC came within three before a free throw by SWU’s Mark Ferguson iced the Wildcat victory with 13 seconds left.
SWU travels to Marshall Saturday to tangle with Canby at Southwest Minnesota State University, beginning at noon.
MCC hosts Mountain Lake Area Tuesday night.

MOUNTAIN LAKE — Josiah Stoesz had a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Mountain Lake Area Wolverines in a victory over the Red Rock Central Falcons Thursday.
After trailing 23-19 after the first half, the Wolverines picked up their play to sail to a 12 point win. MLA out rebounded RRC by a 37-23 margin.
Carter Kirk was second in scoring for Mountain Lake Area with nine points, all of them coming in the second half. Kirk also had six rebounds for the Wolverines.
Jeff DeCock led the Falcons with 19 points and seven rebounds in the game.
The Wolverines (9-2, 5-0) head to Murray County Central Tuesday to face the Rebels, while the Falcons (3-5, 2-3) head to Wabasso Saturday.

ELLSWORTH — Mitch Leuthold scored 22 points to lead the Ellsworth Panthers to a victory over the Edgerton Flying Dutchmen in a Red Rock Conference boys’ basketball game Thursday night.
D’Shaun Herman (12 rebounds) and Johnathon Kramer (three assists, two steals) each scored 12 points for Ellsworth.
Drew Cheskie pulled down nine rebounds, while Daniel Kramer collected six assists and three steals for the Panthers.
Brett Ford led Edgerton with 15 points and five steals, while Isaac Heard had a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double. Jorge Lopez dished out four assists.
Ellsworth (4-7, 3-2) visits Hills-Beaver Creek Tuesday, while Edgerton (3-3, 2-2) hosts Luverne Monday.

ADRIAN — Jon Gallagher (22) and Jeff Sandbulte (20) combined to score 42 points Thursday night, sparking the Hills-Beaver Creek Patriots to a road victory over the Adrian Dragons in a Red Rock Conference boys’ basketball game.
Taylor Recker hit five of Adrian’s 11 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 19 points. Nick Reyne and Brady Lonneman scored 17 and 10 points, respectively, for the Dragons.
Lonneman added eight rebounds and four assists, Reyne pulled down six rebounds, and Cody Polzine dished out five assists for Adrian.
H-BC (3-5, 2-2) plays at Garretson, S.D. Saturday. Adrian (0-11, 0-5) travels to Windom Monday.

WESTBROOK — Klint Knutson scored 15 points to lead a balanced attack Thursday night, as the Southwest Christian Eagles rolled past the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers for a Red Rock Conference boys’ basketball victory.
Leighton Sampson scored 14 points for SWC, while Dominic Nibbelink and Nate Pfeifle scored 13 points apiece for the Eagles.
Taylor Lindaman led W-WG with 21 points.
SWC (8-1, 4-0) plays at Pipestone Area Saturday, while W-WG (3-7, 1-4) hosts Sleepy Eye Monday.

TRACY — Parker Lanoue scored 16 points Thursday night, leading the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers to a big victory over the Renville County West Jaguars in a Camden Conference boys’ basketball game.
Thirteen players scored for the Panthers, who led 46-23 at halftime.
Jordan Lanoue scored 13 points, while Brian Fultz (nine points) and Alec Swan (seven assists) were among the other leaders for T-M-B.
Mitch Treml and Ian Engstrom led RCW (1-8, 1-6) with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
T-M-B (4-6, 2-3) plays at Jackson County Central tonight.
