YOUTH HOCKEY: Trojan Pee Wees overwhelm Blizzard

WORTHINGTON — The Worthington Trojans overwhelmed the Boji Blizzard 14-0 on Sunday at the Worthington Arena.

The Trojans scored seven goals in the first period before moving skaters around to different positions.

The Trojans added a goal in the second period and six in the third period to finish the game.

Nine Worthington skaters had goals against the Blizzard, led by Brian Dykstra and Eric Heidebrink, who each scored a hat trick. Ryan Newman scored twice, while goals were also netted by Davis Moore, Tommy Bauman, Parker Valen, O.D. Othow, Emilio Matias, and Lance Hibma.

Anthony Fogelman assisted on three goals for the Trojans. Also earning assists were Karter Honius (two), Max Carlson, Bryce Olsen, Gage Anderson, Moore, Bauman, Newman, Hibma, and Othow.

Goalie Sam Fellows earned the shutout in net with six saves.

Worthington (9-3-2 overall) outshot Boji 34-6.

The Trojans are back in action at the Winona Winhawks Pee Wee Tournament this weekend. Worthington’s first game is Friday evening against Tartan, which is a program consisting of players from North St. Paul, Maplewood and Oakdale).

Fairmont 5

FAIRMONT — The Worthington Trojans moved into sole possession of second place in the District 4 standings after a victory at Fairmont on Jan. 5.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead 53 seconds into the game with a goal by Jordan Jensen. Sixty-two seconds later Tony Lopez extended Worthington’s lead to 2-0.

Midway through the second period the Cardinals tied the game 2-2. But Evan Eggers scored two goals for Worthington, which grabbed a 4-2 lead before Fairmont battle back to tie the contest 4-4.

The Trojans took advantage of a third-period power play to go ahead 5-4 on a goal from Eggers, who complete his second hat trick in as many games.

Later in the third, Lopez scored two goals 13 seconds apart to earn a hat trick of his own.

Alan Olhausen, Andrew Olsen, Lopez and Eggers all had assists for Worthington.

First-year goalie Gage Langerud had 30 saves in a solid effort in net for the Trojans.

Worthington 4,

New Ulm/Sleepy Eye 2

Eggers produced a hat trick and Lopez added a third-period goal as Worthington defeated New Ulm/Sleepy Eye in a rematch Dec. 30, 2012.

Eggers scored the first two goals during the second period to give Worthington a 2-1 lead. Lopez recorded the Trojans’ third goal 5 seconds into the third period, taking the face off all the way for the score.

After New Ulm/Sleepy Eye closed the gap to 3-2, Eggers completed his hat trick by scoring 47 seconds later to give Worthington its final margin of victory.

Lopez also posted an assist.

Langerud had 33 saves in net for the Trojans.

Windom 8,

Worthington 3

WORTHINGTON — Windom downed a shorthanded Worthington squad Dec. 29, 2012, at the Worthington Ice Arena.

The Trojans had only one player on the bench and eight skaters

Eggers scored two goals for Worthington and Lopez tallied the other one.

Windom received goals from Ryley Espenson (four), Jesse Pygman (two), Curt Pell and Brady Haberman.

SQUIRT DIVISION

Worthington captures consolation title

AUSTIN — The Worthington Trojans won the consolation championship at Austin Packer Classic hockey tournament on Dec. 30.

Austin, Albert Lea, Owatonna, Park of Cottage Grave, Winona and Luverne participated in the tournament.

In the quarterfinals, the squirts took on Park of Cottage Grove, the eventual tournament champion, and lost 9-0.

In the second game, the squirts bounced back to claim a 4-3 victory against Albert Lea. Logan Kluver (assisted by Carlos Garcia), Maggie Putnam (assisted by Carlos Garcia), Carlos Garcia and Colby Nickel all scored goals.

In the consolation championship game, the Worthington squirts took on Winona and won 6-0. The team was led by Carlos Garcias’ three goal performance (assisted by Colby Nickel and Kip Jensen). Dallas Sontag, Jack Black and Kip Jensen (assisted by Carlos Garcia) each netted a goal for the Trojans.

Eddie Canales was strong in goal throughout the tournament and claimed a shut out in the consolation championship game. The squirts play again Sunday when they face Luverne at the Worthington Hockey Arena.
