Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley
Invitational
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa — The Worthington Trojans placed fifth among nine teams during the Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Invitational on Saturday.
Ten of the 11 Worthington wrestlers in the tournament earned a place-finish.
Hser Eh Pwae (1-1 in the tournament at 106), Vince Riley (2-1, pin at 138) and Zach Kempema (2-1, pin at 160) all became runners-up in their respective weight classes.
Jeff Camacho (1-1, pin at 126) and Blake Schroeder (2-1, pin at 170) both won their finals bouts to end up third.
Hser Moo Pwae (2-1, two pins at 113), Cody Michelson (2-1, pin at 132) and Joey Mills (2-1, pin at 152) all posted fifth-place efforts.
King Saenz (1-2 at 145) and Cole Bartels (0-2 at 182) both finished sixth. Joe Pavelko (1-2 at 195) did not place in the tournament.
“It was a pretty good day for us,” Worthington head coach Mark Prunty said. “In Iowa, they don’t have seventh- and eighth-graders wrestling at the varsity level. I think we took the momentum that we had in the triangular (Thursday) against Marshall and Jackson County Central and built nicely from it.
“There were no wrestlebacks in this tournament,” Prunty said. “So, a fifth-place finish was just as good as a third-place finish in some ways.”
Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley won the tournament with 199 points. Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn (139) placed second, followed by Sioux Falls Lincoln (128), Okoboji (112), Worthington (108), Akron-Westfield (107), MOC-Floyd Valley (95), Western Christian (84) and West Sioux (58).
