Letter: It's up to us to bring respect back

I recently helped judge the Elks’ essay contest, “What Does the National Anthem Mean to Me?” Students did a great job of sentence structure and organizing their ideas.

However, a recurring statement — it means I am free to do and say whatever I want — caught my attention. My social studies teacher in public high school taught that my rights end where yours begin. Whatever happened to being respectful of the rights of others, beginning with the unborn?

Where is respect in today’s society? The media spins the truth. We demonize those who think differently. Violence seems to be the order of the day.

Perhaps we can bring about change — beginning with ourselves.
