PREP HOCKEY: Cardinal girls take down Blue Devils

LONG PRAIRIE — Makayla Sterrett scored a hat trick for the Luverne Cardinals in a 5-2 win over the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek Blue Devils during a girl’s hockey game Saturday.
Luverne outshot LP-GE/W-DC 35-13, while Kennedy Gonnerman made 11 saves for the Cardinals.
Madie Oye started off the scoring for the Cardinals when she picked up a goal 11 minute, 53 seconds into the first period to make it 1-0. Sterrett notched her first goal of the game just over 2 minutes later to give Luverne a two goal advantage at the first intermission.
The Cardinals went up 3-0 on Sterrett’s second goal of the night 11 minutes, 10 seconds into the second frame. The Blue Devils cut the lead back to two on a power-play goal by Halley Maas two minutes later. But Sterrett scored moments later to make it 4-2 after two periods.
Madisyn Dingmann scored the Cardinals fifth goal on the night with 10 minutes, 5 second left in the third to give Luverne a four goal lead. Samantha Killian picked up the Blue Devils second goal to make it 5-2.
The Cardinals committed four penalties in the game and were unable to take advantage of three penalties taken by the Blue Devils.
Luverne (12-4) hosts the Worthington Trojans tomorrow.

BENSON — Kendall Meyer made 21 saves on 25 shots for the Luverne Cardinals in a loss to Morris/Benson Area Saturday.
The Storm’s Tanner Picht scored the first goal 12 minutes, 6 seconds into the game to put M/BA up 1-0. Jonny Solma tied things up for the Cardinals with his goal at 1:26 in the first.
Picht scored his second goal of the game just under five minutes into the second period to give the Storm back the lead. Brody Gimberlin followed up Picht’s goal with one of his own to give M/BA a two goal advantage.
Logan Norman scored 1 minute, 10 seconds into the third to bring the Cardinals within a goal, but Picht completed his hat trick on a shorthanded goal with 16 seconds left in the game to stop the comeback.
Luverne (15-3) hosts the Worthington Trojans tomorrow.

SARTELL — Windom Area’s Tyler McGowan made 42 saves on 48 shots in a loss to Sartell-St. Stephen Saturday.
Sartell-St. Stephen scored the only goal in the first on a shot by Kyle Erickson that beat McGowan to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Spencer Zwiener, Ethan Lorsung and Matthew Ringhand all scored for Sartell-St. Stephen in the second period, while the Eagles were only able to pick up one goal from Eric Haberman. Windom Area trailed 4-1 after two frames.
Aaron Randall made it 5-1 for Sartell-St. Stephen to open the third period scoring, but the Eagles scored two goals less than 9 seconds apart to cut the lead to just two. But Sartell-St. Stephen’s Kyle Erickson scored moments later to take back the three goal lead.
The Eagles (10-8) travel to Waseca Thursday to take on the Bluejays.
