TROJAN HOCKEY: Luverne sweeps doubleheader from Worthington

LUVERNE — Chaz Smedsrud helped the Luverne Cardinals boys hockey team keep pace with Marshall in the Southwest Conference race with five goals in a 13-1 league win over the Worthington Trojans Tuesday.

Smedsrud, who scored four of those in the first 17 minutes, added an assist for six points as Luverne improved to 16-3-1 overall and 7-2 in the SWC (one win behind 8-2 Marshall).

Skyler Wenninger finished with seven points (two goals, five assists) for the Cardinals, while Jonny Solma and Jackson Frankenhoff each added two goals and an assist. Connor Hoffman totaled a goal and two assists and Andrew Verhey scored two points with a goal and an assist.

Worthington’s lone marker came in the second period as Andrew Johnson potted a puck off assists from Mitchell Shreiner and Kody Honius.

Kendall Meyer earned the win in net for Luverne, stopping 7 of 8 shots, while Connor Crabtree saved all four shots made against him in relief of Meyer.

Rylan Scholtes faced a barrage of Cardinals’ shots in net, making 55 saves on 68 shots.

Luverne travels to Kasson to play Dodge County Saturday, while Worthington (3-13-0, 0-9-0) travels to play Redwood Valley Thursday in Redwood Falls.

LUVERNE — Putting 77 shots on goal, the Luverne girls hockey team improved to 13-4-0 overall and 8-0-0 in the Southwest Conference with an 11-2 win over Worthington Tuesday.

The Cardinals, who are two games ahead of Marshall in the league standings, received two goals each from Madisyn Dingmann, Katie Eeten and Makayla Sterrett. Five more girls netted a goal apiece as Madison Crabtree, Mariah Aukes, Ellen Dahl, Hailey Sommers and Monique Aanenson all lit the lamp.

Morgan Hohn, Madi Oye, Eeten and Sterrett each had two assists, while Kennedy Gonnerman was 11-for-13 in save opportunities to earn the win.

Worthington received a goal in each of the first two periods as Betsy Thompson scored off Shelby Veen and Allison Kremer assists in the first period and Bailey Kruse was set up by Thompson and Kremer for a marker in the second frame.

Amanda Bristow made 66 saves in net for Worthington (1-15-0, 1-7-0).

The Trojans travel to Windom Area for a league game Thursday, while the Cardinals travel to LeSueur Saturday to take on St. Peter/LeSueur-Henderson/Tri-City United.
