WAHPETON — Skyler Wenninger scored two first-period goals to lead the Luverne Cardinals to a 2-0 win over the Breckenridge/Wahpeton Blades Saturday.
Three minutes, 49 seconds into the first period, Wenninger put a shot past Blades goalie Michael Withuski to give the Cardinals a one goal lead early in the game. Connor Hoffman and Jonny Solma assisted on Wenninger’s goal.
After Breckenridge/Wahpeton’s Aaron Neppl went to the penalty box for interference, the Luverne power-play went to work. Wenninger picked up his second of the night a minute, 5 seconds into the man-advantage to give the Cardinals a two goal lead heading into the second period.
The Cardinals’ power play went cold in the second period, missing out on two man-advantage chances throughout the period. Luverne took its first penalty of the game on an interference penalty assessed to Gunnar Olson, but the Cardinals killed off the chance without allowing a goal.
Neither team scored in the third period, but the Blades got their chances on two late penalties on the Cardinals. Breckenridge/Wahpeton put eight shots on Luverne goalie Connor Crabtree in the final frame, but Crabtree was able to stop them all and preserve the shutout.
The Cardinals (20-4) travel to Minnehaha Academy Friday for their final game of the regular season.
