Letter: Gestation crates will soon be objects of the past

I was sorely disappointed that Emily Erickson of New Fashion Pork was given editorial space in the Daily Globe. Some of the points Erickson tried to make were so baseless that I don’t even know how to address them, so I’ll stick to the main issue: gestation crates.

Take one look at a gestation crate and you’ll see why nearly 20 percent of U.S. states have passed laws to ban farmers from using them. Additionally, the biggest pork buyers in the country, including McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s, have all committed to stop selling pork from farms that use gestation crates because they’re inhumane.

The public and private sectors are ditching crates, and now the agriculture sector is, too. Pork giants like Smithfield, Hatfield, Cargill, and Hormel are all moving away from crates. It’s time that Erickson reads the writing on the wall.
