PREP SOFTBALL: Jackson County Central’s Klontz picks St. Cloud State for softball

JACKSON — St. Cloud State University is the choice of Jackson County Central senior softball player Brooke Klontz.

On Feb. 11, Klontz signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic careers with the Huskies, who are already 2-3 this season in games played on a season-opening road trip at the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas.

“The atmosphere was really great there and (St. Cloud State) seems like a nice fit for me,” said Klontz, who expects to be used as a utility infielder for the Huskies.

Klontz has seen a faster-paced style of softball at the college level.

“I was invited to watch a St. Cloud State practice,” Klontz said. “They were very determined at what they are doing and their hitting was very powerful. They took everything very seriously, but they still had time to have some fun.”

Klontz, an All-Southwest Conference performer in 2012, hit .386 —mostly as a lead off-hitter — and compiled a 6-4 record inside the pitching circle. She smacked three home runs and drove in 17 runs as a junior.

Klontz said she would like to study biology at St. Cloud State and eventually become a physical therapist.

St. Cloud State is an NCAA Division II softball program that is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Under head coach Paula U’Ren, the Huskies were 24-28 overall and 10-16 versus the NSIC in 2012.
