PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Windom Area defeats Luverne

LUVERNE — Kelsey Hanefeld went 7 of 8 from the field for 14 points to lead the Windom Area Eagles to a 54-46 win over the Luverne Cardinals during a Class AA Section 3 South Division Girls’ Basketball Tournament quarterfinal game Saturday.

LUVERNE — Kelsey Hanefeld went 7 of 8 from the field for 14 points to lead the Windom Area Eagles to a 54-46 win over the Luverne Cardinals during a Class AA Section 3 South Division Girls’ Basketball Tournament quarterfinal game Saturday.

The Eagles held the Cardinals to just 19 points in the first half while scoring 26 points to take a seven point lead into halftime. Luverne scored 27 points in the second half to keep the game close, but it was not enough to make a comeback.

Rachel Sorensen picked up 12 points, including a 6-for-6 night from the free-throw line for the Eagles. Sami Peterson added 13 points and was also perfect from the free-throw line (3 of 3). Windom Area missed just three free-throw shots in the game for an 80 percent free throw percentage.

Kaitlin Wohnoutka paced the Cardinals with 16 points and three steals, while Lexi Rust had 12 points. Tara Sudenga picked up eight points for Luverne and led the team in rebounds with four.

The Eagles (15-11) moves on to the semifinal round to face top-seeded Worthington Tuesday in St. James. The Cardinals end the season with a 14-12 record.
