Letter: History is the key to the present with marriage

Within 35 years of Luther’s 95 Theses (an expose of abuses by the church), Europe was two-thirds Protestant. This freaked the Pope out. Ignatius Loyola stepped forward and, with the Pope’s blessing, started a new order, the Jesuits. Their sole purpose was to undermine and infiltrate the Reformation. They focused on higher education, missionary work beyond Europe and politics. In 1536, William Tyndale was burned at the stake for translating the Bible into English. It is estimated the Catholic Church murdered some 68 million non-Catholics, which the Pope finally apologized for in 1995 (a mite late).

The Council of Trent (1545-1563) was convened outwardly to appease the reformers but in actuality doubled down on Catholic dogma. It was totally dominated by the Jesuits, who worked hand in glove with the Dominican Inquisition to burn “heretics” and English Bibles. Ironically enough, the Jesuits themselves produced an English Bible (hitherto unforbidden) in 1582 called the Douay-Rheims. That’s not to be confused with the third version (1949) in use today, which conforms to the King James Bible. Without the Jesuits, there would be no Catholic Church today.

The Council of Trent also gave the world church-state marriage in order to control intermarriage between Catholics and Protestants. The strange thing is that this is still used today as a “Biblical standard” of morality, even though it was given to us by a “church” that killed more people than all the 20th-century despots combined. Today, it is being used to prevent same-sex marriage.

The Christian way is to help gender-confused people to find freedom if they want. It is not to forbid their dubious marriages.
